Many times the vitiligo stops spreading with medical therapy, but a few resistant patches do not re-colourise. For such stubborn patches skin grafting offers a good outcome. Skin with colour cells is taken from the hip or thigh area and transferred to the white skin patch.
There are some dressing and ointments given to speed up recovery of the grafted and donor areas.
The grafted skin leaves the colour forming skin cells and colour formation starts in 3-6 weeks. One may need to continue some applications for best results for many months even after surgery in some cases.
